Land at DXB

Dubai International. Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3; a taxi to Downtown is about 20 minutes.

Check in: Rove Downtown

312 Al Mustaqbal Street, Zabeel 2. Under a ten-minute walk to Dubai Mall, with an outdoor saltwater pool and a 24-hour gym.

Dubai Frame

Zabeel Park, a kilometre from the hotel. Three galleries: Old Dubai, the Sky Deck, then a Future Dubai swirl tunnel.

Evening

Burj Khalifa: At The Top

1 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard. Levels 124 and 125; the SKY ticket adds level 148. Book a timed slot, entry is inside Dubai Mall.

Dubai Fountain show

On the lake between the mall and the tower. Free; the Souk Al Bahar bridge is less crowded than the mall promenade.

Dinner at Time Out Market Dubai

Level 3, Souk Al Bahar. Seventeen kitchens and a terrace facing the tower; open to 1 AM on Saturdays.

Jumeirah and the Future

Morning

Jumeirah Mosque guided visit

Jumeirah Beach Road. The SMCCU tour runs every day except Friday at 10 AM and 2 PM, AED 45; no booking, register 30 minutes ahead.

Etihad Museum

1 Jumeirah Street, beside Union House. The 1971 union agreement told through the seven rulers who signed it; tickets online.

Afternoon / Day

Lunch at Zaroob

Jumeirah Tower, Sheikh Zayed Road. Levantine street food open 24 hours: manakish, shawarma and fresh juice at counter prices.

Kite Beach

Jumeirah Beach Road. Free public beach with the Burj Al Arab in the frame; January is the month the boardwalk is actually pleasant.

Museum of the Future

Sheikh Zayed Road, next to Jumeirah Emirates Towers. Date- and time-specific tickets, AED 169; last admission 5 PM, closes 7 PM.

Evening

Global Village

Dubailand, off Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. Season 31 runs October 2026 to May 2027 - country pavilions, street food and nightly shows.

Al Quoz Galleries, Then Dunes

Morning

Coffee at Nightjar Coffee Roasters

Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz 1. Roastery and cafe inside the warehouse district; filter coffee before the galleries open.

Alserkal Avenue galleries

Street 8, Al Quoz 1. Converted marble warehouses holding most of the city's contemporary galleries; two hours covers it on foot.

Lunch at bkry, Alserkal Avenue

Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz 1. Bakery and cafe on site - sandwiches and coffee without leaving the compound.

Pack for the desert

Closed shoes and a jacket. January days are mild but the dunes get genuinely cold once the sun drops.

Evening

Heritage desert safari

Platinum Heritage runs its heritage safaris in classic Land Rovers rather than dune-bashing 4x4s. Packages differ - check which one includes the falconry before you book, and book with a licensed operator rather than off the street.

Bedouin camp dinner

Dinner in the Bedouin camp once the drive is done: grilled meats, Arabic coffee and dates, served low on carpets.

Drive back to Downtown

Roughly an hour back in from the dunes. Expect to be at the hotel around 10 PM.

Abu Dhabi: Louvre and Grand Mosque

Morning

Book the mosque access pass

The Grand Mosque needs a pre-booked online access pass from szgmc.gov.ae. Sort it a day or two before you drive down.

Drive to Abu Dhabi

About 130 km down the E11 to Saadiyat Island, roughly 90 minutes. Leave Dubai by 8 to be at the Louvre when it opens.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Cultural District. Jean Nouvel's perforated dome drops a "rain of light" over the galleries; book a timed slot, allow three hours.

Afternoon / Day

Lunch at Manarat Al Saadiyat

Saadiyat Cultural District, five minutes from the Louvre. Arts centre open 10 AM to 8 PM with a restaurant, cafe and rotating shows.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

Corniche Road. Eight kilometres of waterfront promenade under the skyline - walkable in January, unthinkable in July.

Evening

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street. Dress code is strict: loose clothing to the ankles, sleeves to the wrists, hair fully covered for women, no shorts or sleeveless tops for men.

Drive back to Dubai

Mosque closes to visitors at 8:30 PM. Back up the E11, about 90 minutes to Sheikh Zayed Road.

Late dinner at Ninive

Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Sheikh Zayed Road. Iraqi, Turkish and Moroccan plates from 6 PM to 2 AM; reserve, smart dress, over-18s.

Al Fahidi Street, Bastakiya, opposite the Musalla post office. Open from 7 AM; order the balaleet and chebab breakfast tray.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Restored wind-tower courtyard house that doubles as a gallery and cafe - swap sides of the creek.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Bur Dubai. Coral-and-gypsum lanes and wind towers from the 1890s, the one district the bulldozers never reached.

Afternoon / Day

Cultural lunch at SMCCU

House 26, Al Musallah Street, Al Fahidi. Emirati food on floor cushions with a host who takes any question, however blunt.

Abra across Dubai Creek

Board at Dubai Old Souk Abra Station for Deira Old Souk. Wooden boats, five minutes, cash to the boatman.

Spice Souk

Al Ras, Deira, straight up from the abra landing. Saffron, dried limes and frankincense sold by weight; the first price is never the price.

Gold Souk

Sikkat Al Khail Street, Deira. Gold sells at the day's rate by weight, with the workmanship charge the only negotiable part.

Evening

Dinner at Al Fanar, Al Seef

Al Seef, on the creek by the main drop-off. Emirati kitchen listed in the Michelin Guide; machboos, jesheed, luqaimat and karak.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Free entry, Sunday to Thursday 9 AM to 5 PM, closed Friday; grinders, brewing pots and a shop downstairs.

Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood at the creek mouth. Heritage houses including the Perfume House and Dubai Creek: Birth of a City; book tickets online.

Souk Al Seef

Al Seef, on the creek. Wind-tower shopping lanes for dates, oud and textiles - the last stop before the airport run.

Last lunch at XVA Cafe

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Courtyard cafe in the hotel's wind-tower house; the quietest hour in old Dubai.

Evening

Taxi to DXB

Bur Dubai to Terminal 3 runs about 20 minutes. The Green Line from Al Fahidi metro also works with light bags.

Fly home from DXB

Dubai International. Terminal 3 is enormous - leave real time between security and the gate.
