Morning
Land at Cape Town International
CPT sits about 20 km east of the city. Pre-book a transfer, or take the MyCiTi airport bus to the Civic Centre.
Afternoon / Day
Check in at Gorgeous George
118 St Georges Mall. Two restored heritage buildings in the city centre, a block off Greenmarket Square.
Lunch at Kloof Street House
30 Kloof Street, Gardens. Victorian house turned dining room with a garden at the back; it opens late morning and runs till late, so book ahead.
Company's Garden walk
Queen Victoria Street. The 1650s Dutch East India Company vegetable plot, now oaks, squirrels and the museum quarter.
Evening
Sunset on Signal Hill
Signal Hill Road. Drive up for the Atlantic sunset over Sea Point. It turns cold and windy the moment the sun drops.
Dinner at The Pot Luck Club
Old Biscuit Mill, 375 Albert Road, Woodstock. Family-style sharing plates at the top of the silo; book, and join the waiting list if it is full.
Morning
Coffee at Truth Coffee Roasting
36 Buitenkant Street. Steampunk roastery open 7 AM weekdays; get the coffee in before the cableway queue builds.
Table Mountain Cableway
Tafelberg Road. Buy the timed ticket online, then check the website again that morning - high wind closes the cableway at no notice.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch at Bo-Kaap Kombuis
7 August Street, Bo-Kaap. Cape Malay home cooking - bobotie, lamb bredie - with the mountain in the window. Closed Mondays; booking is essential.
Bo-Kaap Museum
71 Wale Street. A 1768 townhouse, one of the earliest in the quarter and the only one of its builder's that keeps its original form; it tells the Cape Muslim story. Open Monday to Saturday; half an hour is enough.
District Six Museum
25A Buitenkant Street. The neighbourhood bulldozed in 1966, told by the people who lived in it. Open 09:00-16:00, Monday to Saturday.
Evening
Dinner at Chefs Warehouse
91 Bree Street. Liam Tomlin's tapas-for-two format, one long shared menu for the table. Book a table rather than chancing it.
Morning
Robben Island ferry and tour
Nelson Mandela Gateway, V&A Waterfront. Book online well ahead and take the first sailing - the crossing is weather-dependent and afternoon runs go first when the swell is up.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch at Harbour House V&A
Quay Four, ground floor, V&A Waterfront. Line fish and a glass of Chenin, two minutes from where the ferry lands.
Zeitz MOCAA
Silo District, South Arm Road. Contemporary African art in a grain silo carved hollow by Heatherwick; allow two hours for the atrium alone.
Watershed craft market
Dock Road, V&A Waterfront. Two floors of South African makers under one roof - the sane alternative to airport curios.
Evening
Dinner at Gigi Rooftop
Top of Gorgeous George, 118 St Georges Mall. Rooftop bar and restaurant over the city centre; an easy night after a long ferry day.

Morning
Chapman's Peak Drive
Hout Bay to Noordhoek. A toll road cut into the cliff face, and it genuinely closes for wind and rockfall - the site posts a live open/closed status.
Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point
Table Mountain National Park. Pay the conservation fee at the gate, open 06:00-18:00 from October; the funicular runs up to the old lighthouse.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch at Two Oceans Restaurant
Beside the funicular station at Cape Point. Serves 11:00-17:30 in summer; ask for a window over False Bay and book if you can.
Boulders penguin colony
Kleintuin Road, Simon's Town. Boardwalks over an African penguin colony inside the national park; October falls in the breeding season.
Evening
Dinner at La Colombe
Silvermist Estate, above Hout Bay on Constantia Nek - right on the way home. Set menus only, deposit taken at booking, no children under eight.
Morning
Drive out to Stellenbosch
About an hour from the city on the N2. Collect the rental car in town - the Winelands and the tram day both need one.
Dorp Street on foot
Stellenbosch old town. The longest row of Cape Dutch facades in the country, oak-shaded, with the university around it.
Tasting at Tokara
Helshoogte Road, at the top of the pass. Wine and olive oil tastings, a sculpture garden and the best view back over False Bay.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch at the Boschendal Deli
Pniel Road, Groot Drakenstein. Farm-style plates on the Werf of an estate with over 330 years of winemaking; the butchery is worth the detour.
Babylonstoren gardens
Klapmuts-Simondium Road, Simondium. A walled fruit and vegetable garden on an old Cape Dutch farm; book the garden tour rather than turning up.
Evening
Check in at Le Franschhoek
16 Minor Road. Cape Dutch hotel at the head of the valley, walking distance from the top of the main street.
Dinner at La Petite Colombe
Leeu Estates, Franschhoek. Sister to La Colombe at Leeu Estates, set menus only; the deposit is taken at booking and refunded if you cancel 48 hours out.
Morning
Franschhoek Wine Tram
Terminal at the corner of Main Road and Cabriere Street. Hop-on hop-off tram and bus loops; the colour lines rotate, so check which one runs on your date.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch at an estate on the line
Most stops on the loop have a restaurant. Book the one you want the day before - walk-ins are gone by noon in season.
Huguenot Memorial Museum
Lambrecht Street, at the top of the village. The French Protestant refugees who planted this valley; last tickets go at 16:15, so come off the tram in time.
Evening
Dinner on Huguenot Road
The main street is one long run of restaurants; pick one on the walk back and book it from the pavement.
Repack for the bush
Skukuza flights run tight baggage limits and lodges want soft bags. Leave the wine to be shipped rather than flown.
Morning
Drive back to CPT and drop the car
Franschhoek to the airport is about an hour. Leave by 07:30 to return the rental and still make the mid-morning flight.
Fly Cape Town to Skukuza
Airlink flies CPT direct to Skukuza inside the park - roughly 10:30 out, early afternoon in. It is one flight a day, so there is no later option.
Afternoon / Day
Check in at Skukuza Rest Camp
Skukuza, Kruger National Park. The park's largest rest camp, on the south bank of the Sabie River; ask for a river-facing bungalow when booking.
Evening
Sunset drive from camp
Book the SANParks guided drive at reception on arrival. It stays out past gate closing, which no self-driver is allowed to do.
Dinner at Skukuza
The camp has a restaurant and a shop stocked for a braai; every bungalow comes with its own grill if you would rather cook.
Morning
Dawn drive on the H4-1
The tarred river road east from Skukuza. Be at the gate when it opens; October has thinned the bush and pushed everything to water.
Lake Panic bird hide
Signposted off the Skukuza to Paul Kruger Gate road. A shaded hide on a dam - sit still and let the morning come to you.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch at Skukuza Golf Club
A short drive from camp. Unfenced nine-hole course with a clubhouse deck looking over the water hole; anyone can eat there.
Sit out the heat
October afternoons are hot and the animals lie up. This is a pool-and-nap slot, not a driving one.
Evening
Late loop to Nkuhlu
Nkuhlu picnic site sits on the H4-1 above the river. Turn for home early - arriving after the camp gate closes carries a fine.
Morning
Drive down to Lower Sabie
About 45 km of river road from Skukuza. Give it three hours - the whole point is stopping every few hundred metres.
Sunset Dam
Immediately outside the Lower Sabie gate. Hippo and crocodile in residence; park, cut the engine and wait.
Afternoon / Day
Lunch on the Lower Sabie deck
The camp restaurant terrace hangs over the Sabie River - the best lunch view in the southern half of the park.
Back north on the H1-2
Return on the inland road instead of the river. Open marula country rather than riverine bush, and a different cast.
Evening
Night drive from Skukuza
Book at reception the day before. Spotlights turn up the nocturnal half of the park that day drivers never meet.
Morning
A last Kruger loop
One more circuit from Skukuza before the 10:00 checkout, then head west for the park boundary.
Afternoon / Day
Transfer into Sabi Sand
A short hop west, but slow on gravel. Confirm the gate and meeting point with the lodge - most collect guests there.
Check in at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge
Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, family-run since 1979. Full board with two guided drives a day; there is a pool and a spa for between them.
Evening
First open-vehicle drive
Private reserves may leave the road and use spotlights after dark, which is the reason the rates are what they are.
Morning
Dawn game drive
Coffee at 05:00, out by first light, back for a late breakfast. Take a fleece - open vehicles are cold before sunrise.
Walking safari
Ask the night before about a guided bush walk with an armed ranger. Tracks, dung and trees at eye level rather than big game.
Afternoon / Day
Siesta between drives
The long midday gap is deliberate. Take a book to the hide over the water hole and let the afternoon pass.
Evening
Afternoon drive and sundowners
Out around 16:00, drinks somewhere open at dusk, then spotlights on the way back in.
Boma dinner
Dinner in the open-air boma under lanterns and a fire; the lodge moves it indoors if the weather turns.
Last Drive, Then Home
Morning
Final dawn drive
One more drive before breakfast, then pack. The lodge runs the transfer to the airstrip.
Breakfast back at the lodge
The full breakfast lands as the vehicles come in. Settle the bar bill and tip the tracker and guide separately.
Afternoon / Day
Transfer to Skukuza Airport
Around an hour on reserve roads. Skukuza is a thatched airstrip inside the park - arrive early, but not city-airport early.
Fly Skukuza to Johannesburg
Airlink runs two flights a day to OR Tambo, where the long-haul departures connect. Around an hour in the air.
Evening
No activities planned
